F. Paul
Pacult's Spirit Journal, viewed by many as the final word in independent
spirits evaluation, has announced its annual list of the Best Spirits in the
World in its June edition. The 98th issue of F. Paul Pacult's Spirit Journal
lists nine Whiskeys, one Calvados and one Rum in the expanded Top Ten. This
marks the first time that there has been a tie for the Number One spirit in the
world ranking.
Said
founding editor F. Paul Pacult, "I could not say that the Angel's Envy was
even a hair better than the great and venerable Highland Park 25 and therefore
I ended up calling a tie for the Best Spirit in the World. Clearly, however,
they were the two finest expressions of distillation that I tasted within the
last twelve months. Further, the dynamic growth of high quality American
Whiskeys is reflected in their Top Ten dominance. America's distilling
community, from large-scale leaders in experimentation like Buffalo Trace
Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky to the hundreds of creative craft distillers
like Balcones in Waco, Texas and Pennsylvania Pure Distilleries in Glenshaw,
Pennsylvania who make Boyd & Blair Vodka, continues to surge ahead with
both innovation and imagination."
This
year's roster of the world's elite spirits includes 22 American Whiskeys, 18
Scotch Whiskies, 2 Irish Whiskeys, 16 Rums, 6 Gins, 10 Cognacs, 2 Calvados, 6
Armagnacs, 10 Vodkas, 7 Tequilas, 14 Liqueurs and 7 other assorted spirits. All
spirits listed were rated Five Stars in F. Paul Pacult's Spirit Journal and
were tasted at least once in the past year.
Said
managing editor Sue Woodley, "We acknowledge that all criticism is
ultimately subjective and that lists of 'bests' are controversial. But the
provocative nature of selected summaries stimulates debate among mavens, the
beverage industry and average consumers alike. Discussion is always healthy.
When the critic is trusted and independent, lists can serve consumers well by
paring down their choices in buying circumstances. Even though some spirits on
this year's SJ list are rare and expensive, most others are affordable and
readily available in major metropolitan areas in the US."
